Low-Pressure Die Casting

Low-pressure die casting (LPDC) is a counter-gravity process that uses low-pressure gas (20 to 60 kPa) to push molten metal smoothly up from the bottom of the holding furnace into the die, where it solidifies under pressure. The smooth fill reduces splashing and oxide inclusions, and holding pressure during solidification keeps the casting structure dense with strong mechanical properties. Dimensional accuracy and surface quality are both higher than ordinary gravity die casting.

Low-pressure die casting suits thinner-walled parts, reaching 2 to 3 mm walls and complex internal cavities. Because the metal rises slowly and fills evenly, gas porosity and slag inclusions are reduced. The result is a smooth surface finish and stable dimensions, and compared with gravity casting, higher production efficiency that suits larger runs.

The process offers good surface finish and stable dimensions. Compared with gravity die casting, it also provides higher production efficiency and is therefore well suited for medium- to high-volume production.
